Anti-Ballistic Properties of Aramid Fabrics and Composites: A Review

Abstract: In studies of ballistic impact, the materials used in body armor must have high hardness, light weight, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and other high performance characteristics. Aramid fibers are widely used in anti-ballistic materials. To facilitate the further development of aramid materials, this study reviews aramid research in recent years and analyzes the main factors affecting, and new methods for optimizing, anti-ballistic performance, with the emphasis on bulletproof fabrics. “…[1][2][3][4] They have found utility in a variety of applications, such as anti-cutting materials, bulletproof vests, armor materials, and highstrength parachutes. [5][6][7][8] However, because the microstructure of aramid fibers is formed under non-equilibrium conditions, they are regarded as thermodynamically metastable materials that are sensitive to the surrounding environment. 9 With the expansion in their application domains, aramid fibers inevitably encounter environmental resistance problems.…”

“…Aramid fibers have high strength, high modulus, low weight, and good heat resistance 1–4 . They have found utility in a variety of applications, such as anti‐cutting materials, bulletproof vests, armor materials, and high‐strength parachutes 5–8 . However, because the microstructure of aramid fibers is formed under non‐equilibrium conditions, they are regarded as thermodynamically metastable materials that are sensitive to the surrounding environment 9 .…”
