Anti‐asthmatic Effects of Baicalin in a Mouse Model of Allergic Asthma

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the anti-asthmatic effects of baicalin (BA) and the possible mechanisms. Asthma model was established by ovalbumin (OVA) intraperitoneal injection. A total of 60 mice were randomly assigned to six experimental groups: control, model, dexamethasone (2 mg/kg), and BA (10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg). Airway resistance (RI) and lung compliance (Cdyn) were measured, histological studies were evaluated by the hematoxylin and eosin staining, Th1/Th2, OVA-specific serum, and BALF… Show more

“…In a previous study of ours, we demonstrated the anti-airway remodeling effect of baicalin (16). Moreover, baicalin has been shown to rectify the Th1/Th2 and Treg/Th17 imbalance in asthmatic mice (17). However, the effects and related molecular mechanisms of action of baicalin on CCR7 and its ligands associated with airway inflammation have not been fully elucidated.…”

“…However, a shift from the Th2 to the Th1 immune response may promote bacterial clearance and improve the prognosis of infected individuals [69,70]. According to Ma et al, baicalin treatment effectively reduced IL-4 levels and increased IFN-γ levels in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in a mouse model of allergic asthma [71]. Likewise, based on the results of the present study, baicalin significantly reduced the production of IL-4 and enhanced the generation of IFN-γ in the lavage fluid collected from the peritoneal cavity, reversing the Th1/Th2 balance to a Th1-dominated state.…”

“…Rutin is known to exhibit multiple pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-microbial, anti-tumor and anti-asthma (Chua, 2013;Koval'skii et al, 2014). Similarly, baicalin has been reported to show widely pharmacological and therapeutic properties including antiinflammatory, anti-adipogenesis, anti-asthma, anti-tumor, antibacterial and anti-diarrhea Cui et al, 2014;Ma et al, 2014). Because of the potential beneficial effects of flavonoids on human health, foods rich in flavonoids have attracted great interest recently (Kozłowska and Szostak-Wegierek, 2014;Xiao et al, 2014).…”
