Background: In this era, worldwide interest has been directed towards using natural antioxidants to guard against drug side effects. Saussurea lappa is a famous medicinal plant with many biologically active compounds. Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) is an extensively used glucocorticoid. Hence, this study explored, for the first time, the possible beneficial effects of S. lappa ethanolic extract on TA-induced oxidative damage in the lung and spleen of rats. Methods: Five experimental groups were used: control group, S. lappa-treated group (600 mg/kg/day, orally), TA-treated group (40 mg/kg/twice/week I/P), S. lappa + TA co-treated group, and S. lappa/TA prophylactic group. Results: TA exposure significantly induced leukocytosis and neutrophilia. In addition, TA significantly reduced the levels of C-reactive protein, interleukin-12, tumor necrosis factor α, and immunoglobulins. Lung Caspase-3 overexpression and splenic CD8+ downregulation were also noted in the TA group. TA treatment significantly increased malondialdehyde concentration but reduced superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities. S. lappa counteracted the TA oxidative and apoptotic effects. The best results were recorded in the prophylactic group. Conclusions: S. lappa has a remarkable protective effect via its anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antioxidant capacity. Thus, it could be a candidate as a natural antioxidant to face glucocorticoid’s harmful side effects.

Inflammation is a highly complex mechanism and can be described as the body's first defensive immune system reaction. The immediate purpose is to guard against infectious invasions, the introduction of antigens, any cell and tissue disruption or harm. If it is not treated, it is persistent which progresses to serious degenerative conditions such as rheumatism, atherosclerosis and asthma. Rheumatism is a category of inflammatory disease with chronic conditions. The disease includes a rise in the amount of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes, which primarily influence the synovial fluid of the movable joints and eventually cause cartilage and bone degradation across the joints. Many steroidal and nonsteroidal drugs (Methotrexate, Cyclosporine and Dpencillamine, Ibuprofen, Sulindac, Indomethacin) are prescribed as treatment therapies. But, unfortunately, all these drugs are having side effects. So, to enhance the pharmacological effects and decrease the side-effects of the available treatment therapies, there is a need to move towards alternative therapies. By keeping the limitations of the existing therapies, in the present review, we tried to summarize the data of traditional medicinal plants with maximum pharmacological activities with less side effects for the rheumatism patients. A systematic literature and electronic archive analysis was performed using internet search engines such as Google scholar, Pubmed, Medlineplus, and Science Direct from numerous academic publications. This review paper is summarized with total 500 articles out of which 330 articles are selected to review for extracts and parts used, chemical constituents, traditional uses and for reporting anti rheumatic activity.

Background: Commiphora caudata is commonly called hill mango, an incredibly available species of Commiphora, and belongs to Burseraceae. Commiphora caudata is commonly used in Ayurveda and Siddha medicines. Different parts of the plant have many pharmacological activities like antiviral, antispasmodic, cytotoxic, hypothermic activity, antiacne, hepatoprotective, febrifuge, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. Materials and Methods: Extracts were prepared by successive solvent extraction, In vitro studies like, MTT assay, scratch assay, Estimation of Inflammatory Marker IL-6 by Enzyme-Linked Immuno sorbent Assay (ELISA test), determination of hydroxyproline, estimation of total protein, in vivo excision wound model and diabetic model were done. Results: In all the chloroform extract of Commiphora caudata has shown a good wound-healing property. Conclusion: Based on the ethnic medical uses and proven biological activities, the gum blended in with water is utilized as a mouthwash to cure mouth ulcers and is utilized for wound healing and rheumatoid arthritis., current work focused on proving wound healing potential of plant Commiphora caudata.
