Anti-amnesic activity of Citrus aurantium flowers extract against scopolamine-induced memory impairments in rats

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that mostly affects the elderly population. Learning and memory impairment as the most characteristic manifestation of dementia could be induced chemically by scopolamine, a cholinergic antagonist. Cholinergic neurotransmission mediated brain oxidative stress. Citrus aurantium (CA) has traditionally been used for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and epilepsy. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of Citrus aurantium on scopola… Show more

“…There is also evidence that Citrus aurantium ingestion can affect memory [40, 41]. Therefore, it’s plausible that ingestion of a PWS containing caffeine and/or p -synephrine could affect mental focus and/or cognitive function prior to and/or during exercise.…”

“…Citrus aurantium (generally containing 20–100 mg of p -synephrine) has been purported to serve as a mild central nervous system stimulant [26, 28], suppress appetite [29], increase resting energy expenditure and affect carbohydrate and fat oxidation rates [3033], and promote weight loss [3436] with no negative effects on the cardiovascular system [3739]. There is also evidence that Citrus aurantium ingestion can effect memory [40, 41] and resistance-exercise performance [30]. Theoretically, adding Citrus aurantium to a PWS may promote greater resting energy expenditure, cognitive function, and/or exercise capacity during an exercise bout.…”

“…They have demonstrated promising effects in a wide variety of diseases such as cancer [16,17] , diabetes [18,19] , atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases [20][21][22][23] , learning and cognitive complications [24][25][26] , and wounds [27][28][29] . Furthermore, medicinal herbs are also effective in prevention and treatment of the toxicity induced by other drugs or toxins [30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37] .…”

“…Recently, promising evidence has been reported on the medicinal plants' effects in treating or preventing different diseases including impairments of memory (Baradaran et al, 2012;Mokhtari-Dehkordi et al, 2014;Rahnama et al, 2014) and different types of strokes Rabiei and RafieianKopaei, 2014). Although these observations can be attributed to specific compounds of these plants, they have been attributed mainly to their anti-oxidant properties.…”
