Anti-allergic activity of lotus root ( Nelumbo nucifera ) powder in TDI-sensitized nasal allergy model mice

Abstract: Lotus root (Nelumbo nucifera) is a popular food in Japan and southeast Asia. It is reported that lotus root includes dietary fiber, vitamin C, and abundant polyphenolic compounds. In Chinese medicine, lotus powder is also utilized in anti-tussive or antiinflammatory drugs. In this study, we focused on the effects of lotus root powder on allergy symptoms in mice. First, we assessed nasal allergy symptoms in 2,4-diisocyanic acid toluene (TDI)sensitized nasal allergy model mice. We found that lotus root powder al… Show more

“…Interestingly, the gluten encounter led to hair loss in mice. Indeed, some food allergens, including peanuts and wheat, are commonly linked to hair loss in animals, although it does not occur in humans . Besides, gluten sensitizations caused increased tIgE and gluten-specific IgE levels in the serum, which was combined with a significant elevation of histamine, indicating high-intensity B cell and mast cell degranulation responses in GS mice.…”

“…In this study, lotus root powder showed an especially potent effect against asthma disease risk and is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Lotus root powder reduces serum inflammatory markers such as total IgE and leukotriene B4, both of which play a role in airway hyperresponsiveness and pro-inflammatory responses 48 , 49 . Altogether, the results of the in vivo dietary assessment offer preliminary validation of our serum microbial EV-based disease risk models and reveal foods that may reduce the HFD-associated respiratory disease risk.…”
