Anti-Advanced glycation end-product and free radical scavenging activity of plants from the yucatecan flora

Abstract: Background:Formation and accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGE) is recognized as a major pathogenic process in diabetic complications, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, reactive oxygen species and free radicals have also been reported to participate in AGE formation and in cell damage. Natural products with antioxidant and antiAGE activity have great therapeutic potential in the treatment of diabetes, hypertension and related complications. Objective: to test ethanolic ex… Show more

“…It is widely studied that since AG possesses a nucleophilic hydrazine and a guanidine moiety, this compound may scavenge dicarbonyl compounds and prevent the formation of AGEs [ 45 ]. Accordingly, published experiments report the use of AG as a reference compound in tests of anti-AGE effects of plant extracts [ 81 ].…”

“…Excess of free radicals in the body can generate a cascade of reactions that later play a role in development of cancer and other neurodegenerative diseases. Advanced glycation end product (AGEs) formation in response to free radical oxidative stress is perfect example of its deleterious actions which results in cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease development due to protein dysfunction [25].…”

“…Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder that is characterized by high levels of blood glucose with disturbances of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. [ 1 2 3 4 5 6 ] DM affects more than 371 million people worldwide and accounts for >4.8 million deaths each year. [ 7 8 ] In the case of México, the estimates indicates that the number of diabetic patients will increase from >2 million in 2002 to >132 million in 2030.…”
