Background: The nose is a piriform aperture on the face having roots and a tip or base. Root is continuous above with the forehead. It is one of the most prominent parts of the face which comprises of bony and cartilaginous portions. The bony part is formed by nasal bone, frontal bone and maxilla. The cartilaginous part is mainly formed by septal, major alar, lateral cartilage, and a few minor cartilages. Present study was carried out with objectives of determining important measurements like distance between right and left infraorbital foramina to nasion, distance between right and left infraorbital foramina and nasal height. Then findings are used to determine nasal index. Methods: All twenty-five dry adult human skulls are collected from Department of Anatomy, School of Basic Science, and Chitwan Medical College for study. Gender and ethnicity of scapula were undefined. The ethical clearance was taken from IRC-CMC (Ref: CMC-IRC/079/080-050). All damaged skull and small skull of pediatric age group are excluded. Nasal index was calculated by using formula nasal index = nasal width / nasal height X 100. Photographs were taken. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 20 version software and analyzed as frequency and distribution. Total twenty-five of skulls were measured. Results: Among the twenty-four human dry skulls, with one damaged skull is excluded, study showed that right sided mean distance between nasion and right sided infraorbital foramen and left sided mean distance between nasion and left sided infraorbital foramen are 40.57±3.71 mm and 39.53±4.77 mm respectively. The mean distance between right and left infraorbital foramen, mean nasal height and mean nasal index are 46.80±8.52 mm,16.98±3.008 mm and 47.74±10.90 respectively mm i.e., Hyper Leptorrhine (≤54.9). Conclusion: The data obtained from the present study will be useful when repairing the nose, for facial reconstructive surgeries and also in forensic investigation.

Background: Baseline data collection is always very important for the planning and upliftment of any community. It determines the requirement in a more specific manner, thereby acting as an indicator, which can be used to monitor and evaluate any project. With this intention the Santhal people of Dumka in the state of Jharkhand, have been studied to prepare a baseline of their body measurements as well as their somatoscopic observations.Methods: A total of 206 adult Santhal sample has been collected, of which 111 are females and 95 are males. The data was collected with respect to 17 somatometric variables, 3 anthropometric indices and 24 somatoscopic observations.Results: The mean age of Santhal males in the present study is 35.72 years and the mean age of the females is 32.45 years. A typical Santhal of Dumka, Jharkhand is of short stature, with a hyper dolichocephalic head, females with a mesorrhine nose and the males with platyrrhine nose. The nasal index could be an adaptive strategy of survival among them. They have a euryprosopic face. Their skin colour is dark brown. Hairs are coarse, broad wavy and black in colour, which are medium in quantity. Their eyes dark brown in colour has a marked epicanthic fold. The supraorbital ridges are continuous with a broad forehead. They have a medium facial prognathism with thick lips. The Santhals of Dumka are therefore a well-adapted population of the region.Conclusions: Santhals of the present study show all the characters of Austro-Asiatic classification.

Anthropometric surveys are the most common method of gathering human morphometric data, used to design clothing, products and workspaces. The aim of this paper was to assess how current peer reviewed literature addresses the accuracy, reliability and precision regarding manual anthropometric surveys applied to adult working populations in the field of ergonomics. A literature review was performed in two electronic databases for finding relevant papers. A total of 312 papers were reviewed, of which 79 met the inclusion criteria. The results shown that the subjects of these publications are poorly addressed, so that only 27 studies mentioned at least one of the terms and none of the studies evaluated all of the terms. Only one paper mentioned and assessed precision and reliability of the measurement procedure. Furthermore, none of the publications evaluated accuracy. Moreover, the reviewed papers presented large differences in the factors that affect precision, reliability and accuracy. This was particularly clear in the measurer technique/training, measurement tools, subject posture and clothing. Researchers in this area should take more rigorous approaches and explicit indicators with their results should be presented in any report. Relevance for industry: It is important that scientific literature related to manual anthropometric measurements uses methods for assessing measurement error, since these data are often used to design clothing and workspaces as well as to calibrate non manual methods such as 3D scanners.
