“…This is due to the green revolution that often encourages monocropping, trade practices that promote introduction of exotic species, and transition of food preferences from traditional to processed, refined varieties, among others. 31,32 Our study also showed that that consumers of indigenous foods (although the quantity consumed was low) had higher intake of calcium when compared to the nonconsumers. It is well documented elsewhere that local food resources could be leveraged to add to food diversity and lead to improvement in micronutrient intake with positive nutritional outcomes.…”

“…The tribal population in India in general and the Oraon in particular has been seen to have high rates of malnutrition and CED. 18,31,32 Earlier studies in these communities have also documented this fact across different states and seen that both the adults and children have varying degrees of undernourishment. Globally, researchers have also explored and consolidated evidence on the potential of the biodiversity of forest and wild foods to improve dietary diversity and health outcomes.…”

“…However, the Oraon community consumes indigenous foods that are rich sources of micronutrients, namely calcium, iron, vitamin A, and folic acid (Ghosh-Jerath et al, 2015, 2018. It has been well documented that the nutritional status of Oraon tribal adults and children in Sambalpur, Orissa, was not satisfactory, with all the children suffering from different levels of malnutrition (Beck and Mishra, 2011). Studies across the globe have suggested that there has been a shift in dietary patterns, a phenomenon known as "nutrition transition" (Popkin, 2006).…”

“…Umpteen studies have already been done by many researchers on health and nutritional status of tribal population of different regions of India, related with anthropometry. (Chakrabarty et al, 2008), Oraons (Beck & Mishra, 2010) of Orissa, Oraons (Chakraborty & Bose, 2008) of Jharkhand and Bhotias (Kapoor et al, 2012) of Uttarakhand, in case of males. On the other hand in case of females, we found that percentage of prevalence of CED was very high (≥ 40%) among Santals (Das & Bose 2010), Mahalis (Ghosh & Bose 2017) of West Bengal, Savaras (Chakrabarty et al, 2008) of Orissa and Mannans (John & Ramadas, 2008) of Kerala.…”
