Anthropometric measurements among four Asian countries in designing sitting and standing workstations

Abstract: An anthropometric database for sitting and standing dimensions for Malaysian operators was developed based on the measurements from 146 male and 168 female participants (18-45 years old). The anthropometric data were subsequently compared to those from three selected Asian countries, focussing on the sitting and standing posture dimensions. Thirty-six anthropometric dimensions were selected for comparison based on common availability among the four countries. The results indicated that the Indonesians were the… Show more

“…The hand width was reported as 8.1 cm ve 7.2 cm in Malay males and females, respectively; whereas the same parameter was measured as 9.00 cm ve 8.00 cm in Indonesia males and females. The same parameter was declared as 9.80 cm ve 9.20 cm in Philippine males and females, while the hand width was 7.8 cm in Thai females, respectively (6,(27)(28)(29). In Nigerian population the same parameter was found as 9.73 cm and 9.00 cm in Hausa males and females; 9.57 cm and 9.22 cm in males and females in Nigeria Igbo region; 9.57 cm and 9.38 cm in Nigeria Yoruba male and female population (26).…”

“…The corresponding value was found as 20.62 cm in Hausa region, 20.22 cm in Igbo area and 19.55 cm in Yoruba region(26). In several papers from different populations, it was declared that the hand length value as 17.00±0.80 cm and 18.30±1.10 cm in Malay females and males(27); 18.00 cm and 19.00 cm Indonesia females and males; 17.00 and 19.00 cm in Singaporean females and males (28); 17.95±3.44 cm and 19.75±7.82 cm in Philippino females and males (6); 17.22±10.75 mm (R) -173.76±9.59 mm (L) and 192.86±10.74 mm-191.97±8…”

“…Ethnicity has been reported to be influential for both body proportion and body composition 21 , 22 . In addition, anthropometry differences exist between ethnic groups 23 , 24 . Within Southeast Asia, populations from neighbouring countries have different body dimensions 23 , 25 , and so do people of historically highly associated ethnic groups in East Asia 24 .…”

“…4. All in all, the variations in body dimension of each population in different countries such as age, gender and body type could contribute to significant difference in anthropometric data [26,27,28]. Based from the average pressure distribution value and their relationship with some of anthropometry data, it is known that local anthropometry data may be used to providing comfortness in seat design.…”
