Anthropometric heritability and child growth in a Caribbean village: A quantitative genetic analysis of longitudinal height, weight, and body mass index in Bwa Mawego, Dominica

Abstract: Objectives: Body size and composition vary widely among individuals and populations, and long-term research in diverse contexts informs our understanding of genetic, cultural, and environmental impacts on this variation. We analyze longitudinal measures of height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) from a Caribbean village, estimating the extent to which these anthropometrics are shaped by genetic variance in a small-scale population of mixed ancestry. Materials and Methods: Longitudinal data from a traditional… Show more

“…In order to categorize BMI, the WHO growth curve was used in which BMI was classified into underweight (BMI <5th percentile), normal weight (BMI between 5th and 85th percentiles), overweight (BMI between 85th and 95th percentiles), and obese (BMI ≥85th–95th percentiles). 7 …”

“…Obesity is a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex. 7 Iran is the world's 18th most populated country, whose population is estimated at 81.91 million in 2019. Its territory spans 1 648 195 km 2 (636 372 m 2 ), making it the 17th largest in the world.…”

“…Unique genetic ancestry and haplotype structure in combination with longitudinal health data in this localized horticultural community (Keith et al, 2019) may present unique opportunities to identify biologically significant genetic variants through admixture mapping and other analyses that utilize population structure to inform gene-trait, genegene, and gene-environment associations (Patterson et al, 2010). Additionally, the shared local ecology reduces environmental heterogeneity in this small-scale community compared to variation in lifestyles, resource access, etc.…”

“…First, a pedigree-based analysis of longitudinal growth data estimates the extent to which variation in height, weight, and BMI is shaped by additive genetic variation and environmental secular trends. This content (Chapter Two) was published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology in 2019 (Keith et al, 2019). Second, population genetic analyses of high-density SNP data provide the first genome-wide characterization of admixture and population structure in this unique Caribbean region.…”
