Anthropometric Dimensions and Bone Quality in International Male Beach Handball Players: Junior vs. Senior Comparison

Abstract: Background: Beach handball is a recent team sport characterized by defensive and offensive actions on a sand surface. Scientific evidence has shown that body composition is fundamental in sports performance. The main objective of this study was to know the body composition, anthropometric characteristics, and bone mineral density of elite beach handball players. Furthermore, another purpose was to analyze the differences between categories (junior and senior) and playing position. Methods: A descriptive, cross… Show more

“…The micronutrient intakes are in line with the estimated RDIs for the general Spanish female population, in which both groups had a low to two-thirds intake of iodine, fluorine, vitamin D, vitamin E, and, just in LA group, retinol intakes. These results may be due to the high prevalence of the Mediterranean diet pattern in all southern regions of Spain [24]. Nevertheless, considering the sample sex, type of sport practiced, and altitude, some of these differences can be important.…”

“…The skinfolds measured were bicipital, tricipital, subscapular, supra-iliac, abdominal, mid-leg, and thigh. Faulkner's fat estimation formula was used [24]. All anthropometric measurements were taken in triplicate, using the mean of both for subsequent analysis.…”

“…Significant densitometric differences are obtained in the analysis of functional or bone tissue "without activity". Bone mass is conditionally redistributed from one place to another, where force acts [2,3,12,16]. Liquid trabeculation of the mandible (large intertrabecular spaces and thin trabeculae) is a reliable sign of osteopenia [22,25].…”

“…The skinfolds (bicipital, tricipital, subscapular, suprailiac, abdominal, mid-leg, and thigh) were measured with a Holtain plicometer (Holtain Ltd., Crymych, UK). Faulkner’s fat estimation formula was used [ 35 ]. All anthropometric measurements were taken in triplicate, using the mean of both for subsequent analysis.…”
