Anthropometric characteristics and functional capacity of elite rowers and handball players

Abstract: Specific body composition and anthropometri- cal assessment as a part of morphological analysis should complement physiological profile of elite athletes. The analysis of the anaerobic performance shows that the handball players have greater alactic anaerobic and explosive power component, compared to the rowers in whom the anaerobic endurance and specific training have the greatest effect on the consumption of dominant metabolic substrate during the race.

“…These results were expected, and explained by difference in BM of examined groups. Our results are in accordance with literature findings where handball players also presented with higher BMI [7]. According to the reference values of the WHO, the BMI in handball players may be regarded as increased.…”

“…Traditionally, it has been estimated that throwing speed (TS) depends on different factors such as technique, temporal coordination of the different body segments, and power of both upper and lower body muscle groups [ 10 ]. On the other hand, anthropometric characteristics [ 7 , 11 , 12 ], speed, and throwing accuracy [ 8 , 9 ] are considered as the most appropriate variables for talent detection [ 13 ].…”

“…Furthermore, the dual indirect bioelectrical impedance method was used to determine body composition and hence nutritional status using a multi-frequency, multi-algorithm, French-made, European Community quality-endorsed, portable, painless, and cordless BiodyXpert (CE MEDICAL, France). It has direct hand/foot measurement with sensors integrated in the device (no cable electrodes), weighing only 300 g. More than 77 biomarkers/data with a single measurement [ 41 ].…”
