Abstract: This study assessed the anthropometric and physiological characteristics of elite Melanesian futsal players in order to determine the best performance predictors. Physiological parameters of performance were measured in 14 Melanesian (MEL-G, 24.4±4.4 yrs) and 8 Caucasian (NMEL-G, 22.9±4.9) elite futsal players, using tests of jump-and-reach (CMJ), agility (T-Test), repeated sprint ability (RSA), RSA with change-of-direction (RSA-COD), sprints with 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, and 30 m lap times, and aerobic fitness with t… Show more

“…It has been suggested that the high rates of overweight in the Polynesian population could be related to a poor perception of their own weight status, especially during adolescence [11]. “…Adolescents therefore seem particularly exposed to the risk of becoming overweight [8, 9] and its psychological consequences [8, 10]. Yet, high body mass index (BMI) and high body fat mass (BFM) (mean value: 24.24 kg.m −2  ± 2.7 and 17.6% ± 2.4, respectively) were recently observed in young Melanesian athletes living in New Caledonia, suggesting that the Pacific lifestyle and/or genetic factors, even with high levels of physical activity and sport performance, have an impact on weight status [11]. For the most part, the New Caledonian population has an economic status in line with that of Western countries, but half the population nevertheless follows a traditional tribal lifestyle, similar to that of other Melanesians in the Pacific (i.e.…”

“…The statistical analysis revealed significant differences between the non-training students and futsal players, and nontraining students and soccer players (p < 0.001). FP -futsal players, SP -soccer players, NT -non-training students Discussion body build is a key determinant in the selection of players for team games [25,26]. Overall, the futsal players under study were shorter and lighter that nontraining students and soccer players.…”

“…Em atletas de futebol, já foi observada a existência de uma relação inversa entre o percentual de gordura com os potencias aeróbico e anaeróbico, bem como com a resistência muscular localizada 11,12 . Tais análises reforçam que, para as modalidades já investigadas, a avaliação antropométrica se faz necessária na escolha de futuros atletas 13 e no acompanhamento da eficácia das intervenções do treinamento, visando obter melhores resultados nas competições 14,15 …”
