This article gives voice to coastal Sámi students and explores their negotiations over being Sámi or Norwegian within the Norwegian education system. Through interviews, students share insights on the extent to which education focuses on Sámi issues and reflect upon their identity. The article explores how youths negotiate personal identity within pre-existing structures by employing Archer’s theory on structure and agency as a backdrop. The changing phases in how ‘western’ societies view indigenous practices and knowledges are applied together with (de)colonial perspectives to understand (colonial) structures. Some key findings are that the coastal Sámi students’ identity negotiations are complex, as official discourses seem to restrict them from identifying as ‘real’ Sámi, and that the local Sámi is within a discursive void due to unintended consequences resulting from the unification in the centralised education system. In focusing on students and using the educational system as a backdrop, this article seeks to deepen the understanding of how society and the educational system in particular condition students’ notions of what it entails to be Sámi and how students negotiate their identity.

En este artículo analizo la forma en que opera la teoría en la investigación etnográfica en la antropología social y/o cultural. Argumento que la etnografía supone el despliegue de ciertos procedimientos analíticos que conducen a relativizar a la teoría —y, eventualmente, a reformularla— a partir de su confrontación con los materiales etnográficos: la integración dinámica de las perspectivas nativas en el análisis; la combinación del holismo, la restricción de la preselección de los materiales etnográficos y su estricta contextualización; y diversos usos de la comparación. A continuación, ilustro esta afirmación mostrando cómo mis etnografías de los conflictos entre los asociados de una cooperativa de pescadores y del concepto peronista de ‘lealtad’ dieron lugar a algunos desarrollos teóricos en torno del análisis de la dimensión moral de la vida social. Finalmente, sugiero que esos procedimientos son el correlato al nivel de la metodología de la ‘perspectiva etnográfica’, una teoría muy general sobre la naturaleza de la vida social que ha sido desarrollada a lo largo de la historia de la disciplina.

Field theorists have long insisted that research needs to pay attention to the particular properties of each field studied. But while much field-theoretical research is comparative, either explicitly or implicitly, scholars have only begun to develop the language for describing the dimensions along which fields can be similar to and different from each other. In this context, this paper articulates an agenda for the analysis of variable properties of fields. It discusses variation in the degree but also in the kind of field autonomy. It discusses different dimensions of variation in field structure: fields can be more or less contested, and more or less hierarchical. The structure of symbolic oppositions in a field may take different forms. Lastly, it analyses the dimensions of variation highlighted by research on fields on the sub- and transnational scale. Post-national analysis allows us to ask how fields relate to fields of the same kind on different scales, and how fields relate to fields on the same scale in other national contexts. It allows us to ask about the role resources from other scales play in structuring symbolic oppositions within fields. A more fine-tuned vocabulary for field variation can help us better describe particular fields and it is a precondition for generating hypotheses about the conditions under which we can expect to observe fields with specified characteristics.
