“…The flash floods were also correlated to extreme rainfall and occasional cloudburst events during monsoon from mid-July to mid-September. The 1995 flash flood caused massive landslide at Luggar Bhatti near Kullu, Himachal Pradesh collapsed 65 persons including heavy property damages, overturning a suspension bridge and eroding bridge abutment (Sah and Mazari 1998). Earlier in 1993, flash floods affected the town of Manali, India where massive bank erosion and flood water damaged many buildings and roads.…”

“…Because of the constrained nature of the Kullu Valley and rapid expansion of settlements and infrastructure, there is uninterrupted tendency to encroach the exposed river bed and hence severe damages during higher discharge conditions of the Beas River and its tributaries. The adverse impact of rapid demographic growth and associated infrastructure development is obvious from the fact that considerable damages occur in the Kullu Valley during the flash floods, for example August 1995 (SAH and MAZARI 1998), July and August 2003 and July 2005 (THE TRIBUNE dated July 12 2005) caused heavy damages to life and property in the area. As per reports the flood of July 5 and 6, 2005 (THE TRIBUNE dated July 12, 2005) was the worst in the last 20 years, and it caused considerable damage to many establishments located in the active flood plain areas in the Kullu Valley and its tributary valleys.…”
