Anthropogenic Pollution of Inland Waters: the Case of the Aboabo River in Kumasi, Ghana

Abstract: This study assessed the quality of the Aboabo River and examined the anthropogenic factors that lead to river pollution. Physico-chemical and bacteriological assessment of water samples showed that water from the Aboabo river was polluted and therefore not suitable for domestic consumption. Observation, in-depth interviews, informal conversation and a cross-sectional survey of 396 households in the river basin were employed to elicit qualitative and quantitative data. Direct anthropogenic factors identified we… Show more

“…It has a length of 16.6km from source to the downstream end -Atonsu flowing at an average velocity of 0.87m/s. It is estimated that the Aboabo River basin is home to about a quarter of the city's over 2million residents [1]. The basin is also a hub of several small-and large-scale industries including palm kernel oil extraction companies, charcoal producing business, metal scrap dealers, leather tanning industries, car washing bays, among others.…”

“…The CWQI compares observations to a guideline value, which can be a water quality criterion or a locality specific chemical composition of a hydro geological parameter. The CWQI was formulated with the purpose of rendering a mechanism for reducing the documentation of water quality data [11] [12] [13]. As a compendious tool, it furnishes a wide sketch of water quality data and it is functional for various purposes including drinking water quality, data communications, ambient water quality data processing, combined watershed designing, management and policy decisions in the water supply sector.…”

“…To sustain and maximize the benefit of this resource, knowledge about the natural hydro-geological and geo-chemical processes, as well as associated human effects on the ground water resource is a must for a comprehensive and complete scientific understanding of the vulnerability of the aquifers to pollution. In this context, rapid increase in human population coupled with expanding urbanization and industrialization has led to a greater imbalance between water availability and demand [1]. As worldwide extraction of ground water is accelerated to meet increasing demand, the significance of the chemical quality of ground water also increases relative to its economic value and usefulness.…”
