Anterior urethral valves and diverticula in children: a result of ruptured Cowper's duct cyst?

Abstract: OBJECTIVETo review a series of children with anterior urethral valves and diverticula, to elucidate the pathophysiology and optimal management of this entity. PATIENTS AND METHODSNine cases (all boys; 1963 to 2003) were reviewed retrospectively.

“…Reviews in the literature depend on the size of the cavity, thickness of the dorsal wall and the integrity of the corpus spongiosum or other adequate supporting tissue layers. These large saccular diverticula with inadequate support from the corpus spongiosum may most benefit from open surgical excision and urethral reconstruction providing support of the spongy tissue [9]. The aim should be to completely excise the diverticulum, restore continuity of the urethra, and, if necessary, provide additional tissue to reinforce the repair and prevent a fistula to the skin.…”
