Anterior Percutaneous Endoscopic Cervical Discectomy for Cervical Intervertebral Disc Herniation

Abstract: APECD is not only minimally invasive but can also avoid the morbidities of conventional open cervical discectomy. Patients have a more rapid postoperative recuperation. Nevertheless, it carries the risk of major complications. With careful patient selection and use of meticulous surgical techniques, it is still a safe and effective alternative to open surgical modalities for CHIVD.

“…Finally, Schubert and Merk presented one case of hoarseness in 95 patients. 19 Regarding other techniques of cervical pain treatment, which use the anterior percutaneous approach instead, we must emphasize the major complications reported by Tzaan,17 who showed lesion of the carotid artery in one out of 107 (1%) patients submitted to endoscopic discectomy.…”

“…Nevertheless, PECD carries the risk of major complications as well. There are only few studies on safety measures and complications associated with PECD [15,17].…”

“…[46] Anterior endoscopic cervical discectomy has been previously described as safe[13151618] but with significant inconsistency regarding operative indication, technique and outcomes. [18101417] Deuk Laser Disc Repair incorporates a selective partial discectomy of displaced nuclear fragments, both interposed within the annular tear and fully herniated, while preserving the structure and functional integrity of the remaining spinal disc. Foraminoplasty allows nerve root decompression while annular debridement promotes natural healing of the disc annulus by removing abnormal tissue with the laser.…”
