Anterior dislocation of the shoulder with ipsilateral humerus shaft fracture

Abstract: Anterior dislocation of the shoulder joint with ipsilateral humerus shaft fracture is a very rare injury. Until July 2006 only 18 cases have been reported in the literature. Here we report a case of Anterior Shoulder dislocation with greater tuberosity and shaft of humerus fracture. The patient was treated by Open reduction and internal fixation of the shaft fracture followed by closed reduction of the dislocation. A post-operative rehabilitation program was instituted for complete rehabilitation of the should… Show more

“…Most of the reports in the literature are restricted to case reports only by various authors [4,5,6,7] . Flint reported dislocation of the shoulder with three parts proximal humerus fracture and shaft of humerus fracture [8,9] . Most injuries reported in the literature are caused by high velocity…”

“…Authors differ in fracture management. Splint, casting [ 1 , 3 , 4 , 9 , 10 ], plates and screw [ 4 , 5 , 8 ], external fixator [ 6 ] and even intra-medullary nail [ 2 , 3 ] all have been used with consistent result in fracture union. In our case too, we fixed the fracture prior to reduction.…”

“…Only few cases are reported in the English literature till date having anterior dislocation of shoulder and ipsilateral closed humeral shaft fracture [ 1 – 10 ]. There are cases of two-part fracture dislocation associated with humeral shaft fracture [ 2 , 5 8 , 10 ] and cases of three-part fracture dislocation associated with humeral shaft fracture [ 9 ]. There is no consensus regarding management and mechanism of injury.…”

“…Some authors have proposedthat with injuries involving high velocity trauma, the axialloading force leads to the transfer of energy to the shaftof the humerus and into the shoulder, resulting in thesimultaneous injuries. 7,8 3,4,5 Karimi-Nasab 2 reported management of fracture and dislocation conservatively. Flint 6 reported the conservatively managed for the case of dislocation with three parts proximal humerus fracture with shaft of humerus fracture.…”
