Anterior cruciate ligament: functional anatomy of its bundles in rotatory instabilities

Abstract: The functional anatomy of tha anterior cruciate ligament was studied in 18 freshly amputated specimens. The cruciates were observed in the extremes of flexion and extension, and in midposition in simulated weight-bearing and nonweight-bearing conditions. Five femoral shafts were split longitudinally so that the femoral and tibial attachments of the ligament could be inspected. The findings indicated that (1) the anterior cruciate ligament is a secondary static stabilizer against rotatory instabilities of the k… Show more

“…Contrary to authors such as Horwitz,15 who divided the cruciate ligaments into 2 bundles of fibers, but in agreement with Norwood & Cross, 16 the present study confirms the cruciate ligament as possessing 3 bundles of fibers that intertwine among themselves during leg flexion.…”

“…The ligament consists of two distinct functional bundles that are characterized by their spatial relationships throughout knee flexion and their different roles in biomechanics and stability: the anteromedial (AM) and posterolateral (PL) bundles [1,13,14]. Some authors have described a third intermediate (IM) bundle [15,16].…”

“…[9][10][11] Some authors have distinguished a 3 rd bundle in the anatomy of the ACL, the intermediate (IM) bundle. 12,13 The ACL aims to resist anterior displacement and excessive rotation of the tibia relative to the femur.…”
