Antenna-Pattern Diversity Versus Space Diversity for Use at Handhelds

Abstract: Abstract-This paper investigates diversity for dual-antenna systems operating in indoor environments. First, an approximated equation of the diversity gain is derived for different combining techniques. These theoretical results show that the two-term approximation, as generally used in the literature [5], is too rough an estimate. Consequently, a new six-term approximation is derived. Next, it is demonstrated by a comparison of theoretical and experimental diversity gain values that, due to mutual coupling be… Show more

“…However, we highlight that the generally used approximation, as often used in the literature [19,24] for computing the diversity gain from signals correlation is rough an estimate and becomes inaccurate when the outage probability (α) becomes larger than 0.01 [13]. Furthermore, the equal mean branch power and uniform distributed AoAs in the azimuth plane is considered to drive the diversity gain equations [13,19,24]. The feature of the field simulator model is that the diversity gain for combining techniques can be accurately computed from the cumulative distributed function (CDF) of the simulated signals.…”

“…The validity of the numerical technique is rigorously studied by the statistical analysis of the simulated signals. The numerical approach offers accurate value of diversity gain in Rayleigh fading channels as is expressed analytically at [13]. On the other hand, the numerical method could be extended to simulate the communication performances that cannot be obtained analytically, such as bit-error-rate (BER), frame-error-rate (FER) and etc.…”

“…It is important to point out that in compact antenna diversity arrangement, if a significant mutual coupling exists the phasepattern information is essential for diversity performance evaluation. The idea is effective and simplifies the design of antenna patterndiversity systems, where low correlation coefficient is subjected to small overlapped radiation patterns and the phase-pattern diversity effect is being neglected [21][22][23]. To illustrate this term, the embedded element pattern of the dipole diversity configuration for two different separations (d = 0.1λ and d = 0.2λ) are shown in Fig.…”

“…It is important to note that, the measured diversity gain of the present phase-pattern diversity system is the same as the space diversity system [22], if an equivalent correlation coefficient is considered.…”

“…MIMO antennas or diversity antennas possibly form uncoupled parallel channels which increase the capacity of wireless links. The combination of the wideband and diversity technology enable the high data rate and good resolution in applications [10][11][12]. Then, a prototype of the diversity antenna is fabricated and measured to validate the design.…”
