Antenna and input stages of a 470-710 mhz silicon tv tuner for portable applications

Abstract: This paper describes the antenna and input stages of a silicon TV-tuner intended for portable devices such as cell phones, laptops and PDAs. The tuner meets the requirements of the mobile and portable DVB-T Radio Access Interface Specifications MBRAI [1]. The first stages of the tuner comprise a broadband antenna, a matching and filtering circuit, and LNA. The frequency band of operation is 470-710MHz (DVB-H). The matching and filtering circuitry comprises a strong GSM trap that attenuates the GSM frequencies … Show more

“…As the antenna is used for reception only, some mismatch may be acceptable. Especially, if the LNA is designed together with the antenna so that the LNA adapts to the impedance of the antenna, some mismatch or rather non-50 ohm impedance is then acceptable [7]. In [2] it was presented that the return loss matching between 1 and 2 dB yields approximately the realized gain between -5 and -2.5 dBi, which is at least 2 dB more than required in the DVB-H specification.…”

“…In addition, this chosen LNA topology has the benefit of optimum source impedance close to the input impedance [2]. This gives the best trade-off between power transfer and noise contribution.…”

“…reception with compliance to the MBRAI specification [1], targeting category b2 (pocketable digital TV receivers) and c (handheld portable convergence terminal). The particularity of those categories is the low gain of the antenna, about 10 dBi, due to the small size antenna connected to the devices ( where l is the wavelength) [2]. As a consequence, TV signals are weak compared to conventional TV receivers as shown in Fig.…”

“…Internal DVB-H antennas are preferred for their compact size and robustness. Internal DVB-H antennas developed for clamshell phones have been presented in [2] [3]. For bar-type phones, due to their smaller size, it is more difficult to achieve wideband match [4].…”
