Antenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and Successful Outcome After Postnatal Surgery

Abstract: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a group of disorders where abdominal contents protrude into the chest. The prognosis depends on the contralateral lung volume. The authors evaluated a case of left sided diaphragmatic hernia that was diagnosed at 32 week, and confirmed by MRI. Sonography based Lung to Head circumference ratio (LHR) was calculated. The case was managed at a tertiary care centre where the newborn was immediately shifted to the pediatrician and pediatric surgeon and was operated. Antenatal… Show more

“…CDH is a diaphragmatic deformity caused by failed closure of the pleuroperitoneal canal at approximately 10 weeks of gestation, resulting in herniation of abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity and compression of lung tissues. 10 Approximately 60% of cases are detected prenatally either on routine ultrasound (mean gestational age of 24.2 weeks) or as part of a workup for maternal polyhydramnios. 11 The mortality rate of CDH continues to be high, ranging from 20% to 60%.…”
