Antenatal care and perinatal outcomes in Kwale district, Kenya

Abstract: BackgroundThe importance of antenatal care (ANC) for improving perinatal outcomes is well established. However access to ANC in Kenya has hardly changed in the past 20 years. “…Attending antenatal care clinic for previous pregnancy was found to be a protective factor for syphilis in pregnant women. This is an important finding that could explain the fact that pregnant women who utilise the antenatal clinic have clear knowledge of syphilis or maternal and child health; likewise a study in Kwale district in Kenya showed the same finding with this study (18). Marital status was not associated with syphilis in this study although majority of the study participants were in monogamous marriages, unlike another study which found significant association between being single or in a polygamous marriage as risk factors for syphilis in pregnant women (19).…”

“…Two or more antenatal care visits compared to fewer has been associated with decreased risk of stillbirth [25]. However, because participants generally enrolled in the study in the late second trimester, first-trimester abortions and second-trimester losses are likely underrepresented in this cohort of HIV-infected pregnant women on pre-conception ART.…”

“…Amount of antenatal care plays a role in neonatal outcome [30-32], and each additional ANC visit has previously been found to offer a protective effect on neonatal outcome [31]. When the mother had been referred for antenatal care, however, the risk of transfer was increased.…”
