Antagonistic Bacteria Against Schizophyllum Commune Fr. In Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: Schizophyllum communeFr., is one of the important fungi, causes brown germ and seed rot of oil palm. Biodiversity of antagonistic bacteria from oil palm plantations in Peninsular Malaysia is expected to support in development of biopesticide. Isolation with liquid assay and screening antagonistic bacteria using dual culture assay were carried out in the bioexploration. A total of 265 bacterial isolates from plant parts of oil palm screened 52 antagonistic bacterial isolates against 5. commune. Bacterial isolat… Show more

“…Where, Ar = absorbance of reference (CAS solution and uninoculated broth), and As = absorbance of sample (CAS solution and cell-free supernatant of sample). The two strains were also screened for antifungal activities against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (DSM 1946) using dual culture assay (Dikin et al, 2006), on potato dextrose agar (PDA) (Oxoid, Basingstoke, UK). The antagonistic activity was observed by measuring the size of the growth inhibition zone and the percentage of growth inhibition (PGI) was calculated using the formula: [(KR-R1)/KR] × 100 = % growth inhibition.…”

“…Veronaeopsis simplex is a dark septate endophytic fungus with the ability to suppress Fusarium wilt disease in Chinese cabbage ( Khastini et al, 2012 ). There was also a phytopathogen in Rhizo-Res, named Schizophyllum commune , that causes brown germ and seed rot of oil palm ( Dikin et al, 2006 ).…”

“…After three days, A. porri isolates seven days old, were inoculated into the center of the media, then incubated for four days at 28°C. Each treatment was repeated three times, then the percentage inhibition of the fungus radial growth was calculated using the formula according to Dikin et al (2006) with slight modifications as follows:…”
