Antagonism between abscisic acid and gibberellin regulates starch synthesis and corm development in Gladiolus hybridus

Abstract: Understanding corm development in flower bulbs is of importance for securing the quality of cut flowers and propagation of commercial stocks. Gladiolus is one of the most popular bulb plants worldwide. Its corm development is characterized by starch accumulation. Previous research has shown that phytohormones (especially gibberellin (GA)) are involved in tuber development. However, the relationship between abscisic acid (ABA)/GA and starch during corm development remains unclear. To gain deeper insights into t… Show more

“…In sweet potato, whose agronomical profitability depends on its ability to transform adventitious roots in storage organs, the addition of GA promotes root lignification and reduces starch accumulation, thus preventing the shift from root to storage-root organ [ 77 ]. Similarly, in Gladiolus hybridus , GA prevents starch synthesis and corm development via GhSUS2 activation [ 78 ]. On the other hand, in Panax ginseng and yam, GA promotes secondary growth of storage roots [ 79 , 80 ].…”

“…In this study, DEGs were enriched in ABA-associated pathways in the GO and KEGG analyses, while the ABA content changed under drought stress, which demonstrated that ABA-associated pathways participate in responding to drought stress in tiger nuts. The starch and sucrose metabolism pathway is closely associated with ABA accumulation [ 62 , 63 , 64 ], which was also associated with responses to drought stress [ 36 ]. Starch is made in chloroplasts in leaves which the content decreased under drought stress [ 65 ], while sucrose is produced in leaves following photosynthesis, which the content increased to balance osmotic pressure within plant cells under drought stress [ 64 ].…”

“…Silencing of the targeted gene ( LhMYB114 , LhANS-rr1 , or LhDFR ) by VIGS was performed as described earlier [ 37 , 38 ]. According to the experiment protocol, a 200–500 base pair (bp) fragment, specific to the target gene, was designed and cloned into the pTRV2 vector (primers are listed in Table S1 ) using a One-step Cloning Kit (Vazyme, Nanjing, China), which was named 35S:LhMYB115, 35S:LhANS-rr1, and 35S:LhDFR.…”
