Antacids and dietary supplements with an influence on the gastric pH increase the risk for food sensitization

Abstract: Antacids and dietary supplements influencing the gastric pH increase the risk for sensitization against allergenic food proteins. As these substances are commonly used in the general population without consulting a physician, our data may have a major practical and clinical impact.

“…Detection of Ara h 2-specific antibodies was performed as described previously [24]. Briefly, microtiter plates (Maxisorp, Nunc, Roskilde, Denmark) were coated with Ara h 2 (0.5 lg per well in 100 ll 50 mM NaHCO 3 , pH 9.6) o.n., 4°C, and blocked with TBST/1% BSA (RT, 2 h).…”

“…e in uence on IgE induction and skewing the immune response towards 2 was con rmed for another subclass of H2 receptor blockers [70]. Furthermore, also less potent acidreducing medication such as antacids and base powder were found to be associated with food allergy development [71]. ese results were con rmed in human studies evaluating the in uence of longterm anti-ulcer drug intake on food sensitization and allergy induction.…”

“…Typically, these patients report an itching and tingling of the lips and/or mouth and/or throat, also referred to as oral allergy syndrome (OAS). It is well established that alterations in the gastrointestinal environment due to the intake of reducers of gastric acid production (e.g., proton pump inhibitors) might represent a risk factor for de novo sensitization to food allergens [5][6][7] . In food-allergic patients, several risk factors and amplifying cofactors of anaphylaxis have been recognized [8] , and it has been presumed that gastric acid suppression treatment might influence the extent of allergic symptoms in patients with an existing food allergy [9] .…”
