Anorexia Nervosa: Analysis of Trabecular Texture with CT

Abstract: Purpose:To determine indexes of skeletal integrity by using computed tomographic (CT) trabecular texture analysis of the lumbar spine in patients with anorexia nervosa and normal-weight control subjects and to determine body composition predictors of trabecular texture. Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional study was approved by the institutional review board and compliant with HIPAA. Written informed consent was obtained. The study included 30 women with anorexia nervosa (mean age 6 standard deviation, 2… Show more

“…Because traditional visual inspection of images might not allow for recognizing subtle differences in textural information, the application of TA has the potential to further enhance the diagnostic and prognostic value of imaging. The increase of interest in evaluating TA in radiology is reflected by recent literature describing potential applications of the technique in oncologic (11)(12)(13), neuroradiologic (14), musculoskeletal (15,16), and lung imaging (17). To our knowledge, only one preliminary study, published as a conference abstract, has evaluated the potential of TA for cardiac MR imaging so far (18).…”

“…Kurtosis is a feature derived from the histogram matrix and reflects how values in the histogram are distributed. The higher the kurtosis, the more peaked and uniform is the distribution of pixel gray-levels in the image; the lower the kurtosis, the more heterogeneous the pixel gray-level distribution becomes, being represented by a flatter and broader histogram curve as compared with the normal distribution (26). Thus, the lower T2_ kurtosis in EMB-positive chronic heart failure-like myocarditis (P , .001) reflects a broader and more inhomogeneous pixel gray-level distribution in the corresponding T2 maps.…”

“…Both measures were associated positively with BMI and inversely with the duration of amenorrhea. Another study assessed vertebral bone texture using a low-dose single-section quantitative CT of the L4 vertebral body with use of a calibration phantom, and reported altered bone texture in women with AN, which was associated with lowest lifetime body weight and duration of amenorrhea [31]. …”
