Anorectal Function after Low Anterior Resection for Carcinoma

Abstract: Anorectal function was studied in 13 patients with carcinoma of the rectum 6-12 cm from the anal verge, which was treated by low anterior resection (LAR), and in 13 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Patients were studied before and 3 and 12 months after operation. Anal resting and squeeze pressures were the same in patients and control subjects and were decreased only moderately after surgery, with a slight increase in maximum squeeze pressure 12 months after operation. Three of the patients had an invers… Show more

“…Bowel function improves over the ensuing 1 to 2 years, and this improvement correlates well with increasing capacitance of the "neorectum." [19][20][21] Because of this early improvement in function, the current study only examined longterm bowel function more than 2 years after anterior resection. The current study did not find a significant correlation between the level of the anastomosis and postoperative stool frequency or incontinence.…”

“…The reflex is communicated via the intrinsic nervous system, and is not triggered in patients with Hirschsprung disease as a result of the dysfunction of the intrinsic innervation. The reflex can also not be triggered initially after LAR (61,66,128), but is restored within a period of one year after the operation (25,26,83,89,121,124,141). In our own study the reflex was seen only in 40 % of patients at the first follow-up examination, and in 75 % six months later (26).…”

“…According to the researches, some authors (H. Suzuki, et al), who studied this function in patients with «straight» anastomosis, the figures obtained remained fairly low in the next and late postoperative period [22][23][24][25][26].…”
