“…The wide range of HIV seroprevalence rates observed in the hospitals reflects the variation in distribution and manifestations of the HIV epidemic between and within different geographical areas. A similar disparity in levels and distribution of HIV infection was found in the USA in the hospitals participating to the Sentinel Hospital HIV Surveillance System (17,18), as well as in European studies conducted among unselected patients attending health care services by testing pooled residual laboratory sera (2,4,5). These studies, however used different inclusion criteria and were conducted during different years, rendering comparisons difficult.…”
