“…Because the RAG-2KO hosts lack CTL, these differences in cell recovery could not have been due to CTL-mediated rejection. However, the RAG-2KO mice do have NK cells, which can reject donor cells differing at classical or nonclassical MHC class I loci (e.g., H-2 b Marilyn cells into H-2 k hosts; 38 , 39 ), but do not seem to recognize MHC class II differences (e.g., Marilyn cells into H-2A b− hosts).…”

“…These cells we refer to as NK ceils. Results stemming mainly from work using leukocytes maintained for several days in culture have indicated that leukocytes with other phenotypes can mediate NK-like cyto toxicity [8][9][10]. We prefer to consider non specific cytotoxic cells with these other phe notypes as classes of cells distinct from NK cells that one isolates directly from the ani mal.…”

“…A large amount of work in cell culture has indicated that NK-like cells can be grown out in IL-2-containing medium [8][9][10][56][57][58], Whether these cells are true NK cells or abnormally differentiated T (or NK) cells is for the most part uncertain. Brooks et al [59] have shown that a cloned T cell line can acquire an NK cell phenotype simply by in creasing the concentration of IL-2-containing supernatants in the culture fluid [59], Thus, many putative 'NK clones' may be T cells whose specificity is unknown or lost and which have acquired the ability to kill like an NK cell.…”

“…The mediator cells of these two activities form different cell populations with different target cell selectivity and recognition, as shown by cold-target inhibition and by single-cell assays [8,20]. Studies on the origin of NK-like activity generated in mixed leukocyte culture (MLC) have given contradictory results, some of which support a T cellderived [12,13,18] and others an NK cell-derived origin [10,22). Recently, Nieminen & Saksela [14] reported a new monoclonal antibody, NK-9, which in addition to NK cells also recognizes noncytotoxic precursors for NK-like effector cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes, thus suggesting a common precursor cell for both these activities.…”
