Anomalous Origin of the Middle Meningeal Artery from the Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery

Abstract: Various anastomosis and aberrant origins of the middle meningeal artery (MMA) have been documented in literature. However, there has been no report of its origin from the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) or its branches. In this report, we discuss an anomalous origin of the MMA from the PICA. Also, we discuss the embryological and anatomical development of the MMA. Imaging identification of the origin of the MMA is important while planning surgical and endovascular interventions in the region of the… Show more

“…Although many studies have pointed out that the complex embryological development of the MMA may lead to numerous variations, 13,14 we failed to find any description in the medical literature that presents data similar to ours and thus could be directly confronted with our results. However, we believe that the explanation for the formation of this intermittent bony tunnel may be related to the embryological association that exists between the skull/dura mater and the MMA.…”

“…Waga et al 19 published a single case of basilar-MMA anastomosis in a 47-year-old man during angiography. Recently, Kuruvilla et al 2 described the first angiographically documented case of the anomalous origin of the MMA from the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. According to the authors, the posterior inferior cerebellar artery-MMA anastomosis can be obscured by arteriovenous malformations and vascularized tumors involving the dura of the posterior cranial fossa.…”

“…There are many PICA variants, including persistent trigeminal artery, duplicate origin, fenestration, and anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA)-PICA variant. An extradural origin of the PICA from the VA has been reported in 5%–18%, usually at the C1 and C2 levels, and there have also been reports of the PICA arising from numerous other vessels [1] , [2] , [3] , [4] . However, the PICA originating from the ascending pharyngeal artery (APA) has been very rarely reported.…”
