Anomalous gas in ESO 149-G003: a MeerKAT-16 view

Abstract: ESO 149-G003 is a close-by, isolated dwarf irregular galaxy. Previous observations with the ATCA indicated the presence of anomalous neutral hydrogen ($\rm{H{\small I}}$) deviating from the kinematics of a regularly rotating disc. We conducted follow-up observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope during the 16-dish Early Science programme as well as with the MeerLICHT optical telescope. Our more sensitive radio observations confirm the presence of anomalous gas in ESO 149-G003, and further confirm the former… Show more

“…3D techniques have two main advantages relative to 2D ones: first, they allow for more complicated morphological and kinematic models to be applied to deep, high-resolution data (e.g. Józsa et al 2009;Khoperskov et al 2014;Di Teodoro & Peek 2021;Józsa et al 2021); and second, they can be robustly applied at lower spatial resolutions and across a wider range of disk geometries than in 2D (e.g. Kamphuis et al 2015;Di Teodoro & Fraternali 2015;Lewis 2019;Jones et al 2021).…”

“…The centre of the model, the systemic velocity, and the dispersion were fitted to be constant with radius. After attempting several combinations of parameters, and calculating errors as described in Józsa et al (2021), we arrive at a slightly warped disk with a parametrization as shown in Fig. 7.…”

“…Although CARACal was initially developed to reduce data from MeerKAT, its scope has been broadened to allow data processing from any other radio telescopes. Examples of peer-reviewed papers using CARACal include Ianjamasimanana et al (2020), de Blok et al (2020, Józsa et al (2021).…”
