The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity for films of poly(vinyl chloride) whose macromolecules are crosslinked with chains of polyene conjugated bonds-the copolymer of vinylene and vinylchloride obtained as a result of the thermolysis of poly(vinyl chloride) in solution-is investigated. The experiments are performed for a series of samples 10 ± 1 μm in thickness, including pure poly(vinyl chloride) and copolymers with various concentrations of conjugated bonds, in the temperature range 15-85°C. At quite a high concentration of conjugated bonds, stepwise changes in conductivity of more than 10 orders of magnitude are observed. With an increase in temperature, the samples containing conjugated bonds transi tion from the state of low conductivity to the state of high conductivity. For the first time, it is found that the transition has a pronounced two step character; i.e., between the extreme states of low conductivity (the sam ple resistance R v > 10 12 Ω) and high conductivity (R v = 0.5 Ω), an intermediate quasistable semiconducting state with R v = 10 4 -10 5 Ω is registered. With an increase in the concentration of conjugated bonds, a ten dency for the temperature transition-a jump in the electrical conductivity-to increase is observed. The contents of the conjugated bonds in the copolymer samples are evaluated according to the absorption spectra in the visible range.

Compositions based on polyvinylchloride (PVC), which is sensitive to thermal aging, are used for the majority of electric cables as polymeric insulation. It is shown for the first time by the example of the most widespread polymeric insulation, which is made of polyvinylchloride preliminarily subjected to partial ther molysis, imitating its faster aging, that electrical conductivity of PVC can acquire an anomalous (not follow ing the Ohm law) character due to aging. Transitions of PVC from a state with usual (low) conductivity into a state with anomalously high conductivity that have a spontaneous uncontrollable character are observed in this case. It is especially noteworthy that the character of these variations is large scale, which makes it pos sible to easily transform PVC from the state of typical dielectric into the class of conductors. It is noted that the method of removal of a fire hazard (by maximally possible removal of short circuits caused by thermal aging of polymeric insulation) should have a preventive character, being the most efficient, simplest, and most convenient.
