Nanoparticles of cadmium peroxide (CdO 2 ) were immobilized in poly 2,2 bithiophene (PBTh) to build photoactive inorganic/organic interfaces (I/O/I). Studies indicated that the CdO 2 initially immobilized in the organic polymer partially decomposed to a low band gap CdO. Therefore we refer to this mixture as CdO 2 /CdO. The CdO 2 /CdO/PBTh assemblies were subjected to optical and photoelectrochemical investigations in aqueous electrolytes containing acetate, nitrate, or phosphate. The equilibrium mixture of CdO 2 /CdO influenced the optical conductivity and dielectric contents of the assemblies. Furthermore, O 2 played an important role in the charge separation and transfer processes. The effects of an applied magnetic field were investigated and reported. The results were explained on the basis of formation of hybrid sub-bands due to band alignments between the assembly components. The photo-induced charge generation of PBTh was improved by occlusion of CdO 2 in the polymer as was evident by the greater photocurrent generated by CdO 2 /CdO/PBTh than that generated by PBTh.

A novel catalytic material (mesoporous TiOz films) for the cathodic detection of hydrogen peroxide in air-saturated aqueous solution is described. The immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOD) as enzyme model onto the TiOz electrode provides an efficient biosensor for the arnperometric detection of glucose at -0.15 V (vs. SCE). GOD molecules were immobilized in an inorganic laponite gel and cross-linked by glutaraldehyde. The highest sensitivity and detection limit were 3.33 mA M-' cm-' and 15 pM, respectively. In addition different procedures of enzyme immobilization including cross-linking with glutaraldehyde and physical entrapment in a functionalized polypyrrole film have been compared.

Methodology for zinc phosphate pigment incorporation into polypyrrole matrix

In this work, the incorporation of a commercial zinc phosphate pigment into polypyrrole (PPy) matrix during its electrochemical synthesis on mild steel was studied in order to produce PPy/zinc phosphate composite films as a protective layer against corrosion. Potassium nitrate, oxalic acid, tosylic acid and sodium salicylate solutions were used as electrolytes in cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic polarisation studies. The influence of synthesis parameters such as nature, concentration, pH and stirring of the electrolyte on the degree of incorporation of the pigment was investigated, as well as time and current densities of the electropolymerisation process. Their influence on current efficiency was also evaluated. Sodium salicylate was the only electrolyte to show a high current efficiency in the polymerisation reaction and to yield a composite film with a reasonable amount of zinc phosphate. In this electrolyte medium, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that zinc phosphate may be found in the polymeric matrix: (i) as a conductive ionic minority form and (ii) as a non-conductive non-ionic majority one for higher incorporation levels. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that zinc phosphate is heterogeneously distributed on the surface of the polymer.
