“…The nature of the regimes may be further investigated by a consideration of the discharge voltage standard deviation. In this work, no measured voltage oscillations exceed 2% of the mean voltage; this was the threshold described in reference [32] for a spot-plume transition. For all the discharge conditions explored experimentally, the discharge appears to remain in the spot mode, according to this criterion.…”

“…The spot mode is usually the operation mode desired and is associated with high electron density, low electron temperature (Csiky identified this mode with temperatures in the range of 0.5 eV [2]) and low discharge oscillation. The plume mode is associated with lower electron density, higher electron temperature (in the range of 1 -2 eV in reference [2]) and higher oscillations of the discharge voltage and current (a ratio I d,std /I d,mean above few percent is usually attributed to the plume mode [32]), leading to a lower cathode lifetime [33]. The experimental work presented in this article focuses on discharge conditions for which the cathode discharge is in the so-called spot mode.…”

“…During operation, the thruster body is floating. A heated 5 A-class hollow cathode with a disk-shaped LaB 6 emitter was used to generate the electron current [5,41]. The cathode is located outside the channel with its orifice in the vertical plane that contains the channel outlet, tilted towards the thruster.…”

“…An external igniter electrode has been added to the cathode to ease ignition. The igniter design is based on the one of the 5 A-class cathode studied in our laboratory [19,20]. The igniter is a 2 mm in diameter tungsten rod placed 2 mm downstream the cathode keeper orifice.…”
