Annular Pressure Loss Predictions for Various Stand-off Devices

Abstract: During drilling and cementing operations, many stand-off devices, such as centralizers, stabilizers, reamers, turbulators, cutting bed impellers, and friction reduction devices are widely used. Some of these devices are designed to enhance the displacement efficiency during cementing operations, to increase hole cleaning efficiency, or to reduce torque and drag during drilling operations. The hydraulics program for the deep and especially ultra deep wells constitutes a significant portion of the well planning.… Show more

“…There are three possibilities to account for this complex phenomenon: Use an empirical model based on relevant experimental data, develop a physical law that uses statistical physics methods, or synthetize the results of many simulations made with a detailed computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) model of the problem, similar to the work performed on annular pressure loss around stabilizers presented by Yao and Robello (2008). In a first approach, we have chosen a method that is based on empirical correlations because of readily available results.…”

“…One of those devices is the stand-off device (SOD), which can include centralizers, stabilizers, reamers, turbulators, and friction reduction devices (Samuel, 2008). Increased oil demand has led to increases in the number of wells drilled each year, as well as to the depth of the wells.…”

“…Tthe case of concentric drill pipe and casing analysis has been done by Yao and Samuel, 2008 and the effect of eccentricity and pipe rotation was not considered. These centralizers are fitted with a hinged collar to maintain the casing or liner in the center of the wellbore.…”
