Annual changes in ovarian development stages of farmed female red‐spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara, and inducing sexual maturity using photoperiod manipulation

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between melatonin and the reproductive mechanism of farmed female red‐spotted groupers, Epinephelus akaara. Through the reproductive cycle experiment, the sexual maturity period was determined to be from June to July, following which the spawning season occurred in August. In addition, kiss1, kiss2, and GPR54 mRNA expression levels peaked in January, whereas that of sbGnRH mRNA remained at high levels from January to May and decreased during the sexual maturity a… Show more

“…In recent years, the deployment of artificial reefs in specific areas to restore fishery resources has been extensively practised both domestically and internationally. Epinephelus akaara mostly inhabits the interior of tubular reefs or the narrow crevices between reefs and the shaded areas covered by reefs, while larger reef models can yield greater fish-gathering effects [ 8 ]. Paralichthys olivaceus prefers to inhabit sandy or rocky areas.…”

“…The red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara , is widely distributed in China, Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries and is recognized as one of the most important marine fish due to its high-quality meat and good commercial value [ 1 ]. Recently, most studies focused on the effects of environmental factors, such as water temperature and photoperiods [ 2 , 3 ], on the growth and development of this species. However, there are also reports that light spectra can influence the entire life cycle of teleost fish, from embryonic development to sexual maturation [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”
