Annotated check list of the Noctuoidea (Insecta, Lepidoptera) of North America north of Mexico

Abstract: An annotated check list of the North American species of Noctuoidea (Lepidoptera) is presented, consisting of 3693 species. One-hundred and sixty-six taxonomic changes are proposed, consisting of 13 speciesgroup taxa accorded species status (stat. n. and stat. rev.), 2 revalidated genus-group taxa (stat. rev.), and 2 family-group taxa raised to subfamily. Sixty-nine species-group taxa are downgraded to junior synonyms or subspecies (stat. n., syn. rev., and syn. n.), and 6 genera relegated to synonymy. Sixty-s… Show more

“…Hampson placed them in Parallelia Hübner and Poole (1989) moved them to Dysgonia. Dysgonia was placed in the tribe Ophiusini by Fibiger and Lafontaine (2005) before being moved to the Poaphilini by Lafontaine and Schmidt (2010) along with Argyrostrotis Hübner and Parallelia Hübner. Barcoding and morphological characters of the genitalia place them with members of the genus Argyrostrotis and nearest neighbor analyses place the species A. anilis with Neadysgonia.…”

“…The genus Spodoptera Guenée, 1852 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Noctuinae) (Lafontaine and Schmidt 2010) is cosmopolitan and includes many of the most important agricultural caterpillars (Pogue 2002). Spodoptera albula (Walker 1857) has been recorded from Florida and Southern Texas, throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and from Venezuela south to Paraguay and Southern Brazil (Pogue 2002, Zenker et al 2010, and Chile (Angulo et al 2008).…”

“…Species of the genus are distributed in North America, Europe, Central, North and East Asia. At present, the genus includes 78 described species and subdivided into 2 subgenera: Lithophane and Prolitha Berio, 1980(Poole, 1989Ronkay et al, 2001;Lafontaine & Schmidt, 2010;2015). Many species of the genus were described in last three decades (Hreblay & Ronkay, 1999;Troubridge, 2006;Brou & Lafontaine, 2009;Walsh, 2009;Ronkay et al, 2010;Benedek et al, 2013).…”
