Annotated catalogue of marine squamates (Reptilia) from the Upper Cretaceous of northeastern Mexico

Abstract: Recent work in the Upper Cretaceous of northeastern Mexico has produced a diversity of vertebrate remains. For specimens referable to Squamata, both old and new, an annotated catalogue is here provided, wherein are summarised the geological context and morphological features of each specimen. All specimens appear to represent marine squamates, including an aigialosaur-like reptile preserving integumentary structures, several vertebrae possibly representing mosasauroids, the first Mexican mosasaur known from si… Show more

“…Aigialosaurus dalmaticus (Kramberger 1892) and Opetiosaurus bucchichi (Kornhuber 1901) were found on the island of Hvar, Croatia (Isola di Lesina), whereas Carsosaurus marchesetti (Kornhuber 1893) and "the Trieste aigialosaur" deBraga 1992, currently being described by A. Palci (personal communication, 2005)) were found near to Komen, Slovenia. In addition to these specimens, a number of partial specimens have been assigned to the "Aigialosauridae" including Haasiosaurus (= Haasia) gittelmani from the Cenomanian of Israel (Polcyn et al 1999), Dallasaurus turneri from the Turonian of Texas , and a partial specimen from the Turonian of Mexico (Buchy et al 2005).…”

“…Limbed snakes, which were exclusively known from Northern and Southern margins of the Mediterranean Tethys, became known intercontinentally in the Turonian (Gardner and Cifelli, 1999;Rage and Werner, 1999;Caldwell and Albino, 2001). Mosasauroids, also exclusively known from Europe in the Cenomanian, increase in size and distribution and by the mid-Turonian could be found in Africa, Europe, and North and South America (Von Loh and Bell, 1998;Bardet et al, 2003Bardet et al, , 2008Buchy et al, 2005;Schulp et al, 2008;Smith and Buchy, 2008;Longrich, 2016).…”

“…Bell & VonLoh, 1998) and from Mexico (Buchy et al, 2005). A plesiopedal mosasauroid from Nuevo Leon is reported to be early Turonian in age (Watinoceras coloradoense Zone; Buchy et al, 2005). Other occurrences of dolichosaurs or mosasaurs appear to be no older than middle Turonian (Collignoniceras woollgari Zone, ~ 92 Ma; G.L.…”
