Annonaceae: Breaking the Wall of Inflammation

Abstract: Inventories of tropical forests have listed Annonaceae as one of the most diverse plant families. For centuries, it is employed in traditional medicines to cure various pathological conditions including snakebite, analgesic, astringent, diarrhea, dysentery, arthritis pain, rheumatism, neuralgia, and weight loss etc. Phytochemical analysis of Annonaceae family have reported the occurrence of alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenes, diterpenes and diterpene flavone glycosides, sterols, lignans, and annonaceous acetog… Show more

“…Another important compound is acetogenin. Annonaceous acetogenins are a group of potential anti-neoplastic agents isolated from Annonaceae plants because of their strong cytotoxic activity (Yuan et al, 2006;Attiq et al, 2017). Their cytotoxicity is mediated by the depletion of A TP levels via the inhibition of NA DH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) of the mitochondrial electron transport system (Zafra -Polo et al, 1998;Yuan et al, 2003;Yuan et al, 2006).…”

“…Consistent with the former, effects of A. squamosa were significantly enhanced by cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibition using IBMX. Interestingly, traditional use of A. squamosa in asthma treatment [ 37 ] involves elevation of cAMP in bronchial smooth muscles, relaxing the airway passage and downregulating cellular replication in smooth muscles [ 38 ].…”

“…Annonaceae is among the largest planet family with more than 3,000 species. Many of its species are famous in regions of rain forest due to wide range of medicinal activities (Attiq et al, 2017 ). Dillenia serrate is also popular among Malaysian peninsular region due to its medicinal activity against internal hemorrhage, rheumatism, generalized body pain and inflammation (Jain, 1994 ; Panda, 2004 ).…”

“…The natural products with medicinal properties have been used to treat all sorts of inflammatory conditions (Petrovska, 2012 ; Daniel, 2016 ). These traditional anti-inflammatory remedies later become the counter stones for the production of Aspirin, the first natural product derived synthetic anti-inflammatory drug (Attiq et al, 2017 ). Since then the exploration of natural bioactive compounds has been quite promising, resulting in the discovery of numinous secondary metabolites with extra ordinary bioactivities including artemisinin (Dewick, 2002 ), vinblastine (Cragg et al, 1997 ), pilocarpine etc (Patwardhan et al, 2004 ; Zhang L. et al, 2005 ).…”
