Anmerkungen zur Herkunftsfrage des Gundestrupkessels

Abstract

In der kontroversen Herkunftsdiskussion des Silberkessels von Gundestrup wird ein neuerDeutungsansatz vorgeschlagen, indem zwischen kultureller und geographischer Herkunft einerseits sowie Ursprung der Auftraggeber und der Handwerker andererseits differenziert wird. Die Herkunft der Auftraggeber wird anhand technologischer und ikonographischer Indizien auf Gallien eingegrenzt. Ausgehend von einer Stilanalyse der dekorierten Silberplatten werden zwei durch jeweils einen Meister repräsentierte ‚Schulen' identifiziert. Während der eine Meister ebenfalls dem gallischen Kulturraum entstammte, steht der zweite Meister in Tradition eines thrakisch-hellenistischen Silberhandwerks. Dabei könnte es sich um einen exilthrakischen Toreuten handeln, der an den römischen Reichsgrenzen Silberphaleren für thrakische Hilfstruppen produzierte.Dans la controverse sur l'origine du chaudron de Gundestrup, on propose une nouvelle approche qui distingue sa provenance culturelle et géographique de l'origine des commanditaires et des artisans. L'origine des commanditaires se délimite à la Gaule grâce à des indices technologiques et iconographiques. L'analyse des plaques en argent décorées permet d'identifier deux "écoles" représentées chacune par un maître. Alors que l'un est également issu de l'aire culturelle gauloise, l'autre se situe dans la tradition de l'orfèvrerie thraco-hellénistique. Il s'agit là peutêtre d'un toreute thrace exilé fabriquant des phalères en argent pour les troupes auxiliaires thraces aux frontières de l'empire romain.Amidst the controversial discourse on the provenance of the silver cauldron of Gundestrup, a new interpretation is proffered that distinguishes between cultural and geographical provenance on the one hand and the provenance of the contractors and the craftsmen on the other. Technological and iconographical evidence points to Gallia as the provenance of the contractors. Based on a style analysis of the decorated silver plaques, two "schools" represented by one master each have been identified. While one of the masters also originated from the Gallic Culture range, the second master follows in the tradition of Thracian Hellenistic silver craftsmanship. This might be an exiled Thracian metalsmith who produced silver phalerae for Thracian reinforcements on the border to the Roman Empire.
