Ankyrin-Like Protein AnkB Interacts with CatB, Affects Catalase Activity, and Enhances Resistance of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola to Phenazine-1-Carboxylic Acid

Abstract: pv. oryzae, which causes rice bacterial leaf blight, and pv. oryzicola, which causes rice bacterial leaf streak, are important plant-pathogenic bacteria. A member of the adaptor protein family, ankyrin protein, has been investigated largely in humans but rarely in plant-pathogenic bacteria. In this study, a novel ankyrin-like protein, AnkB, was identified in pv. oryzae and pv. oryzicola. The expression of was significantly upregulated when these bacteria were treated with phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA). is … Show more

“…In these bacteria, the ank B gene is located 58 bp downstream of catB , which encodes the enzyme catalase. AnkB affects catB gene expression, catalase activity, and sensitivity to H 2 O 2 ( Pan et al, 2018 ). In A. hydrophila , the ankB gene is in tandem with katE , which encodes catalase, and in most strains with a gene encoding a superoxide dismutase precursor.…”

“…The wild‐type IRBB10 and five edited lines (SU‐1 to SU‐5) were inoculated by pin‐pricking method (Pan et al, 2018) with Xoc strains BLS256 and RS105, respectively, to investigate potential resistance. At 14 days post‐inoculation (dpi), the lesions induced by BLS256 and RS105 on the five edited rice lines (SU‐1 to SU‐5) were significantly smaller than those on IRBB10 (Figure 1e, 1f).…”

“…This operon is up-regulated in the presence of H 2 O 2 [ 80 ], at 37 °C [ 81 , 82 ], and when Leptospira are cultivated within a dialysis membrane chamber implanted in rat peritoneal cavities [ 83 , 84 ]. The function of the LIMLP_10150-encoding protein is unknown but similar ankyrin repeat-containing proteins have been shown to interact with and promote the catalase activity in other bacteria [ 85 , 86 , 87 ]. It has been proposed that the ankyrin domain-containing protein stabilizes the catalase in a proper conformation or orientation to promote H 2 O 2 entry in the active site [ 85 ] or heme binding [ 86 ].…”
