Ankle Taping Can Improve Proprioception in Healthy Volunteers

Abstract: Because ankle proprioception is critical to the functional success of surgical and rehabilitation treatments, these results regarding proprioception are of particular importance because ankle taping is often used in preventing ankle sprains and it is a common treatment after ankle injuries.

“…Taping is thought to stimulate cutaneous mechano- and nocireceptors, thereby altering reflex activation and sensory feedback and increasing electromyographic activity [18,19], thereby enhancing proprioception [20] and muscle strength and power [15,16]. …”

“…The ranges of wrist flexion and extension for a healthy person are 0° to 90° and 0° to 70°, respectively1 ) . Taping is being used as an important means of prevention of injuries and management of acute damage in athletes during training and competition2 ) . Such taping affects proprioceptive senses and therefore is thought to have an effect on prevention of injuries2 ) .…”

Proprioceptive senses refer to senses modifying and delivering information on one’s physical location, posture, and movements from receptors of the skin, muscles, tendons, and joints to the central nervous system2 ) .…”

“…The tape could act as an "external ligament" and provide direct mechanical support, 2,10,17,36 and it could increase the sensitivity of the proprioceptive feedback mechanism. 11,23,27 Because the great majority of ankle ligament injuries involve [ research report ] a sudden fast inversion movement, in which the muscle reaction time is inadequate to react and protect the joint, 2,20 the external ligament analogy appears to offer the most valid mechanism in such situations. However, when compared to real biological ligaments, conventional athletic tape appears to have 2 major disadvantages.…”
