Anisotropic susceptibility of ferromagnetic ultrathin Co films on vicinal Cu

Abstract: We measure the magnetic susceptibility of ultrathin Co films with an in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy grown on a vicinal Cu substrate. Above the Curie temperature the influence of the magnetic anisotropy can be investigated by means of the parallel and transverse susceptibilities along the easy and hard axes. By comparison with a theoretical analysis of the susceptibilities we determine the isotropic exchange interaction and the magnetic anisotropy. These calculations are performed in the framework of a H… Show more

“…With the help of a Heisenberg model solved within the Green function theory (GFT) it is possible to perform a quantitative comparison with experiment. Jensen et al [4] measured the influence of the magnetic anisotropy on the parallel susceptibility of ultrathin Co films grown on Cu substrate. By comparison with a theoretical analysis of the parallel susceptibility (201) in the framework of GFT they determined the parameters of the isotropic exchange interaction and magnetic anisotropy.…”

“…17 , general analytical formulas were derived on the basis of RPA and the Anderson-Callen decoupling for the three components of the magnetization for 3D and 2D FM systems for any spin quantum number. The Green's function formalism was also applied to uniaxial out-of-plane and uniaxial in-plane exchange anisotropies 18,19,20 . The papers above [12][13][14][15][16][17] dealt only with a uniaxial out-of-plane single-ion anisotropy.…”

“…Jensen et al [1] have measured parallel and tranverse susceptibilities of a bi-layer Co film with an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy, and analysed their results with a manybody Green's function theory assuming a spin value of S = 1/2. We have generalized their work to multilayers and arbitrary spin in Ref.…”

“…In keeping with Refs. [1] and [2] we do not include the dipole-dipole interaction, because it is nearly isotropic for an in-plane situation.…”
