Anisotropic elastic full-waveform inversion of walkaway vertical seismic profiling data from the Arabian Gulf

Abstract: A B S T R A C TBorehole seismic addresses the need for high-resolution images and elastic parameters of the subsurface. Full-waveform inversion of vertical seismic profile data is a promising technology with the potential to recover quantitative information about elastic properties of the medium. Full-waveform inversion has the capability to process the entire wavefield and to address the wave propagation effects contained in the borehole data-multi-component measurements; anisotropic effects; compressional an… Show more

“…Raknes & Arntsen 2014;Ovcharenko et al 2018). Since elastic anisotropic waveform inversions have higher computational costs to their isotropic counterparts, they only recently became the focus of attention (Köhn et al 2015;Podgornova et al 2015;Owusu et al 2016;Bergslid et al 2015;Oh & Alkhalifah 2016;Kamath & Tsvankin 2016). Feasibility and resolution studies for 3-D inversions are still computationally expensive, therefore they are often performed either in 2-D (Podgornova et al 2015) or with very few simultaneous (encoded) shots (Köhn et al 2015).…”

“…There are different strategies for selecting a proper source wavelet for the inversion. Owusu et al [2016] performed FWI of VSP data with a wavelet derived from far-field measurements of an airgun array. Pratt [1999] and Roberts et al [2008] introduced different source wavelet inversion algorithms in frequency domain and successfully used them for the inversion of experimental data.…”
