Anischia, Perothops and the phylogeny of Elateroidea (Coleoptera: Elateriformia)

Abstract: The larvae of Anischia Fleutiaux and Perothops Laporte are described. Cladistic analyses based on adult and larval morphology, as well as CO1 sequence data, place both genera in the Eucnemidae clade within the Elateroidea (sensu stricto). The subfamily Anischiinae Fleutiaux, 1936 is placed in the family Eucnemidae in a clade containing the more derived eucnemid subfamilies (Melasinae, Eucneminae and Macraulacinae), while Perothops and Phyllocerus Lepeletier & Serville represent subfamilies basal to the rem… Show more

“…We use as the backbone for our discussion the evolutionary hypotheses presented in Muona (1993) and Lawrence et al (2007), as they are the only analytical studies including a full set of Eucnemidae higher categories. A list of descriptions available and material seen is presented separately (Table 1).…”

“…presented an evolutionary hypothesis for the family Eucnemidae on the basis of 80 binary adult morphological characters; both external and internal features were included. Lawrence et al (2007) added COI data and 60 binary larval morphological characters to their adult character set in an analysis of Eucnemidae relationships. Both these analyses recovered the same hypothesis for Eucnemidae, the latter study clarifying the position of Perothops Laporte and including Anischia Fleutiaux in Eucnemidae.…”

“…Eight genera are included in it presently. Crowson (1955) included Lissominae and Thylacosterninae in Throscidae as well, but analyses based on both morphological and sequence data place them in Elateridae (Lawrence 1988;Muona 1995;Lawrence et al 2007;Vahtera et al 2009;Kundrata et al 2014). These studies agree on two points: Throscidae and Eucnemidae are closely related, and they form a more basal grouping than the Lycidae-Lampyridae-Cantharidae-Elateridae lineage.…”

“…The infestation level and damage caused by the wireworms depend on many factors, including the composition of insect species and population density, as well as the plant species, its growth stage, plant vigor under attack and plant density (Anonymous, 1983;Platia and Gudenzi, 2005;Lawrence et al, 2007;Platia, 2011).…”
