We read with interest the article by Singh and collegues suggesting that nitrofurantoin is effective for treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) in older women with lower glomerular filtration rates (GFRs).

Four of the six reviews (Brodie et al, 2002;Cimolai, 2015;Guay, 2001;Sehulster & Chinn, 2003) and four of the seven commentaries (Disalvo et al, 2006;Khan & Farrag, 2000;Lefebvre et al, 2008a;Murthy et al, 2015) focused on risks associated with infection control.
