Animal Bocaviruses: A Brief Review

Abstract: The recently discovered human Bocavirus has been preliminary classified into the genus Bocavirus of the family Parvoviridae. Animal bocaviruses have been known in veterinary medicine since the early 1960s. This paper reviews the current knowledge about the two eponymous members of the genus: bovine parvovirus (BPV) and canine minute virus (CnMV). In contrast to other parvoviruses, bocaviruses contain a third open reading frame in the mid of the genome encoding for a highly phosphorylated non-structural protein… Show more

“…However, examining whether HBoV was the cause of vomiting in individuals whose samples we analyzed in the current study was not within the scope of this project. It is important to note that we isolated the virus in respiratory-associated specimens even though the virus has also been associated with diarrhea in humans [23], which is also a feature common in animal parvovirus infections [24]. These unique characteristics reflect the many aspects of virus infection that are yet to be explored, especially in the developing world where gastroenteritis and diarrhea cases are high.…”

“…The clinical signs found in CnMV infection may vary, be unapparent, or apparent as respiratory problems, enteric disease and reproductive disorders [71]. Infected puppies less than 1 month of age may have mild symptoms or accelerated death, depression, lack of appetite, acute myocarditis, respiratory failure and enteritis.…”

“…It is a small (22 nm), non-enveloped virus with icosahedral structure. BPV is a pathogen of cattle found worldwide that causes severe gastroenteritis in calves, mild respiratory infection, and may cause reproductive failure (Manteufel & Truyen, 2008;Sandals et al, 1995). It is a contamination risk for commercially prepared bovine serum and bovine-derived products.…”
