Agastache urticifolia (Benth.) Kuntze (horsemint), Achillea millefolium L. (yarrow), and Perideridia gairdneri (Hook. & Arn.) Mathias (yampah) are native, culturally important plants that grow in the subalpine meadows of Montana. Analysis of the composition of essential oils extracted from these plants showed that the main components of essential oils obtained from flowers and leaves of A. urticifolia (designated as AUF/AUL) were menthone (2.7/25.7%), isomenthone (2.6/29.1%), pulegone (78.9/28.8%), and limonene (4.2/6.2%), whereas essential oils obtained from the inflorescence of A. millefolium (designated as AMI) were high in α-thujone (17.1%) and β-thujone (14.9%), 1,8-cineole (17.0%), camphor (13.0%), sabinene (7.0%), guaia-3,9-dien-11-ol (3.2%), and terpinen-4-ol (2.5%). Essential oils obtained from the inflorescence of P. gairdneri (designated as PGI) contained high amounts of dillapiole (30.3%), p-cymen-8-ol (14.1%), terpinolene (12.0%), 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-cyclohex-2-enone (6.2%), and γ-terpinene (2.4%). Evaluation of their immunomodulatory activity demonstrated that essential oils extracted from all of these plants could activate human neutrophils with varying efficacy. Analysis of individual components showed that dillapiole activated human neutrophil intracellular Ca2+ flux ([Ca2+]i) (EC50 = 19.3 ± 1.4 μM), while α-thujone, β-thujone, menthone, isomenthone, and pulegone were inactive. Since dillapiole activated neutrophils, we also evaluated if it was able to down-regulate neutrophil responses to subsequent agonist activation and found that pretreatment with dillapiole inhibited neutrophil activation by the chemoattractant fMLF (IC50 = 34.3 ± 2.1 μM). Pretreatment with P. gairdneri essential oil or dillapiole also inhibited neutrophil chemotaxis induced by fMLF, suggesting these treatments could down-regulate human neutrophil responses to inflammatory chemoattractants. Thus, dillapiole may be a novel modulator of human neutrophil function.

4-n-butylresorcinol (4-nBR) has a significant effect on skin pigmentation, but its poor solubility, low stability and strong irritation to the skin limit its application. In this study, 4-nBR was prepared into 4-n-butylresorcinol nanoemulsion (4-nBR-NE) for the first time, which improved the solubility and stability of 4-nBR and greatly reduced the irritation of 4-nBR on skin. On this basis, the relationship between the viscosity of nanoemulsion and the formulation process, and the relationship between the ratio of surfactant and the formability of 4-nBR-NE were further studied. A nanoemulsion with adjustable viscosity (AV-NE) and nanoemulsion with low surfactant content has been successfully developed. The particle size of 4-nBR-NE was 13.34 ± 0.1646 nm, and PDI (0.08532 ± 0.0191) was small, and the particle size distribution was uniform. The encapsulation rate of 4-nBR-NE was 80.05 ± 0.75% by UV-VIS spectrophotometry. In addition, 4-nBR-NE had excellent stability for several months that the particle size was almost unchanged. We also confirmed through cells and transdermal evaluations that the original irritation of 4-nBR on cells and skin could be effectively reduced after preparation of 4-nBR-NE. Then 4-nBR-NE was prepared into essence. TEM showed that the shape of the 4-nBR-NE could still be observed after the essence was prepared, indicating that the shape of the 4-nBR-NE could still be maintained when the 4-nBR-NE was added to other products as an intermediate. In summary, 4-nBR-NE could not only improve the stability, solubility and transdermal delivery efficiency of 4-nBR, but also effectively reduce the original irritation of 4-nBR, which can be used to help treat pigmentation, melasma, freckles and other skin diseases. 4-nBR has increased its applicability in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Objetivo: Realizar uma revisão integrativa narrativa sobre plantas alimentícias não convencionais (PANC), que apresentam ação inibitória da enzima acetilcolinesterase, utilizando para isso as bases de dados mais consultadas na atualidade; Alencar os metabolitos identificados nas espécies alimentícias não convencionais com aplicação anticolinesterasica. Métodos: Levantamento de artigos que abordaram estudos de plantas nas bases de dados PubMed, Scielo, Tandfoline, Springer link, Scopus, ScienceDirect, e demais sites de busca acadêmica sem restrição de idioma e ano, utilizando os descritores e DeCS (Descritores em Ciências da Saúde). Resultados: Foram identificados 128 estudos, dos quais 22 foram selecionados para esta revisão. Conclusão: O caminho a ser percorrido é longo, até agora não sabemos em que momento um novo fármaco chegara para auxiliar no tratamento dessa doença, nesse meio tempo várias pesquisas surgem com proposito no tratamento, acessível da Doença de Alzheimer e essa pesquisa servira como base para futuros autores na busca de marcadores químicos para tratamento da Alzheimer e plantas alimenticias.
